It either closes the box, or, if you count from the handle, downstream gear #10 gets jammed and doesn't allow the contraption to turn at all.
Those are my guesses.

It swaps direction 13 times (gear to gear and crossed belts produce opposite rotation). Direct belts just transfer so they're meaningless.
So an odd number of swaps - the last cog is spinning opposite of the crank so it pulls the lid up.
