I finally feel i have sufficient funds to buy a 45-70. Wanted one for years.
Have one in an 1873 trapdoor Springfield that my dad had ever since i can remember. Sold it once but guy came back and asked if he could get his monies back and dad said sure so now i have.
No ideal of the history but dad said it was Custer's rifle and Indian took and did some modification on it. Only problem with story it was made in 1881.
Have put a bullet in chamber but that is it and it does need some love. Carbine but I think maybe a cut down rifle.
Would love to have a model 71 Winchester lever in the 45-70 but they are rare and have not seen one. See price on those for a deluxe is from $2000 to $5000 and they are around in 348.
Cimarron has them in 45-70 lever but what i really would like is a cimarron buffalo rifle, single shot maybe an 1874 Sharp with a Malcolm scope. Have a couple of Cimarron and i do feel they are a quality gun.
But been looking for two years now and have yet to find one for sale. Always out of stock.
If you know where i could get one and the scope let me know. I do not care for Henry and maybe in the end will need to buy in a lever action. Na, i guess in time to get what i really want which would be a real Sharp but i am sure they are out of my price range.
And then see if i could hit the bad guy at 800 yards as they claim they did in the old days with that rifle, scope and caliber. Seen it done on one of the old cowboy shows hitting the Chief so they had to go home and bury him. db-2

SDMF:
I guess that explains why i cannot find an original one in 45-70.
However, it was my understanding that a few were offer in 45-70 and 33wcf.
Will dig out some of my old rifle books and look again but my main book is at my camper so may take a while. db

It appears most of the books are at the camper but a few from back in the 30's and later. Some mention of the 71 but only in 348. Then i ended up reading some articles from back then so did not get very far in my research. Some great articles on some of the older rifles and one could buy some nice ones for in the twenty dollar range. A box of 20 348 for $2.00.
Had a person one time told me he had a 71 in 45-70 and his friend had one also. Some time ago so now i need to dig more. db

DB-2, You've got the '71 and '86 confused.

sdmf:
One of my books from 1937-39 did discuss the model 71 and stated a few were made in 33wcf and one person said he had a 45-70 model 71.
But most mention the 348. No matter.
For me now, i need to find for sale a cimarron buffalo rifle single shot 45-70 and the Malcolm scope. If i get that one in time i hope to find enough funds to purchase a deluxe model 71. "in 348" db

Anyways it appears Ruger is taking these guns seriously and I appreciate it.
Don't need a bear gun and am leaning toward the .357. If they produce a .460 and .500 I'd choose the .460 despite my previous ramblings.
When I win the lottery I'm going to Rigby or H&H for a two bbl set double in .500 S&W and .375. (non-regulated other than elevation)

Very interesting, ENJOY! I have friend who has a model 94 Trapper. He carries it behind the front seat.
