Would like to have a 240 wby built with a longer barrel, shoot 55g bullets out of it. I think it would be a real barrel burner. I was getting 4100 out of a 243 with 55s

I have a 240 Wby with a Brux 1 - 14 twist shooting 55 Gr Blitzkings and I get just over 4050 FPS. Im shooting Winchester 540 powder. To get 4500 FPS I could never get it out of mine. Im sure I could get over 4500 with my 22-6MM AI pushing 50 gr Blitzkings. But not my 6MM AI pushing 55 gr Blitzkings.

The Nosler ballistic tips could not handle the torque in any of my rifles above.

5 inches at 400 yards. wow. I am buying this Ruger model 1 in 300 Weatherby for a 1000 yard shot at a buffalo. I believe a 10-foot drop at 1000 yards. How do i correct that and still kill the buffalo? db

4500?? How much powder are you running? The fastest I've seen is right at 4100fps with 51.5 grains of Varget and 51.5 grains is the max load.

Just out of curiosity I took a 240 Wby and a 22 - 6MM AI and 6 MM AI and checked weight with water in them. The 240 Wby holds 62.9 gr and 22 - 6 MM AI hold 66.4 and 6 MM AI holds 68.7.

There is know way you can get 4500 out of a 240 Wby. Even a compressed load of 55 gr wouldn't make 4400.

Get closer and shoot it at 150 yds.

Or you can just go pour some grain in the feed bunk and shoot it at 10 yards from the pickup window...

4500 is simple. You just don’t open the Chrony flat, shortening the distance between the screens.

In response to OP, I’ve got a 1:7 .224 Lilja Kimber Montana dupe ordered, should arrive in Apr. Then turn a .204 varmint into a “Frankentana” (blued action/SS bbl) 1:7 223 Rem. Shorten the bolt-stop/ejector, lengthen the mag-box to accept ~2.55 COAL. Plunk a 2.5-10x32 Mil-Dot NF NXS atop it.

What bbl length? With my fantasy gun I'm seeing a 26in heavy sporter. I believe a full bull would be too heavy...Also would a 26 give diminishing returns in your opinion? One more: Why did you go Rem instead of Wylde or 5.56?

I’m over max load load but not by much, got 4200 out R 15, and 4150 FPS out imr 4064. Checked 3 other guns that day and the speed seemed right out of the chronograph. Idk what to tell everyone else but that’s what it was reading. I will believe the chronograph over a book every day of the week. Also I was getting 4100 out of my 243 when I had it, with 55s

This is the chronograph I have, I guess I don’t know what you mean by shortening the screens. I want to know the true speed so if I’m im not doing something right I want to know

22", factory Kimber Montana bbl taper. With the NF atop it should be 7.25# all up, give or take an OZ or 2. 22" is a great plenty out of a 223 and far handier than 26". I've done the 10#+ rifle thing and short of shooting prairie dogs, I prefer lighter and shorter.

Regarding chambering to 223Rem. It's doubtful the rifle will ever see a single round of factory ammo and my dies are 223Rem so that'll be that.

How much Varget? I did some fiddling with Quickload, and it shows ~97K PSI to get to 4500FPS w/24" 240Wby and 55 BT's. That kind of pressure is "1 and done" as your primers will fall out.

Bit more fiddling shows no powder no matter the burn rate nor compression gets you to 4500FPS without being @ or above 90K PSI.
