Anyone have something bouncing around to share?

I get this bug every spring: My turkey/doe gun for the Hills which will probably never happen:

700 action; match 5.56 chambered Douglas air gauged 26in bbl; medium contour: 1/7 twist--recessed crown: Some sort of 2x7 Leupold with German #1 reticle.

I may spray paint the metal but want good figured walnut and semi-gloss Tru-Oil finish applied by me. I've done enough research to possibly fake the appearance of a Rigby etc. stock. It wouldn't look like dog shit.

It's "my" gun dammit.

Just dropped off a rifle to be rebarreled ti 280AI

Tikka t3 action. 26 inch proof research barrel. And when uncle Sam approves my tax stamp a banish 30 will be riding around on it as well

Still haven't decided on a stock/chasis system yet but really like the grayboe Phoenix. Also considering an Iota Kremlin or saying the hell with it and getting a MTD hunt26 chasis.

Scope will most likely be a burris veracity in a 5-25x50 or a burris signature in 5-25x50. Want to stick with a similar scope as my other rifle

I've often thought of reaming/sleeving 7 RM's and factories simply renaming the rd the .280 Ackley. On the other hand I'm not convinced headspacing off a belt is a horror worth the aforementioned bullshit.

I often wonder what the problem is. I have a 300 Win mag that shoots under .2 inch with 210gr Berger VLDs. I did set my dies so the belt and shoulder contact at nearly the same and I get long life out of brass. I have read many articles about what a problem the belt is, but I often wonder if it's just hype to sell a million new rifles. My 300 WSM which is supposedly the best thing since sliced bread, because of no belt and a short powder column can't come close. However since the rifles ate so different I really can't compare the two.

Lapua makes brass for the .300 win mag also which alone makes it more cool. And I love the belt it makes it a magnum

Have wondered what has been tried with the well-known .270Win. Has anyone ever tried a 1/7 or 1/8 twist barrel. I have been shooting "My Gun" a .270 Rem 700 since 1964. Still shoots well and it just feels good in my hands. Have a couple other rifles but they don't feel quite the same even though they are Rem. 700's as well. Another .270 and a .25-06. The 25 is pretty new and love shooting it, just doesn't feel the same and not as comfortable.

Have never shot a 6.5 Creed and don't have any plans to own one but as I understand them they were just an average gun ballistically until they went to a faster twist and the longer bullet. What would happen with the .270 with a faster twist and longer bullet? Anyone have any information or have tried it.

Been wacking animals with all my 7mmags and run the hell out of it. Never any troubles with brass or anything I do reload maybe why. My friends loves his 280AI and Ackley but wont FPS mine. Dame fine cartridge thou.

I have a Kimber Montana in 270Win w/1:8 twist Lilja. Shoots 140gn Badlands Super BullDozer projectiles to ~1/2MOA out to 500yds from a 7.25# all-up package.

In regards to the OP, when/if brass/dies availability becomes not such a pain in the rump I’m considering re-barreling a SS M70 from 7WSM to 1:7 6 PRC.

Isn’t that why they came out with the 6.8 western? To use bigger bullets wouldn’t a guy be stuck with having to get a custom barrel and have to reload all the ammo because no manufacturer will make the heavy bullet loads?

Yep, but, I get an extra 200yds of bullet flight while keeping that flight time under 1-second. It’s worth it to me.

I prefer low BC partitions for hunting because I’m not out to punch holes in paper I’m out to have a clean kill.

Would like to have a 240 wby built with a longer barrel, shoot 55g bullets out of it. I think it would be a real barrel burner. I was getting 4100 out of a 243 with 55s

I have a .240 Weatherby and shoot 100 grain bullets. The barrel heats up fast but I enjoy the gun . I went with 26 inch 1:7 twist barrel

Although I have thought about a build, never seriously looked into it. What is an average cost. Is that a better rough or just go with a really expensive production rifle like fierce or Christiansen arms

I've mathed my OP to approximately two grand without scope. I'd DIY the stock work and would begin the project with a beater from a pawn shop. Scope would come off E-bay and would likely be sent to Leupold for a custom reticle unless I got lucky. Hopefully also get lucky with a true match chamber. My tooling about in the murky world of .223/5.56 has revealed this of real concern. It's "my" gun and am more comfortable with a 5.56 match than a .223 Wylde. Goal would be "nickel" groups out to imposed limit of 300 for turkey vitals.

It's nice in the Hills to legally zap the henned bastard strutting his shit in the middle of a field on a rainy day. For the life of me I can't figure out why they leave the woods. My guess is to eat worms and less noise.

IMO: Too much luck involved for a head shot beyond 25yds (to include does): Click "Watch on Utube":

I have had 6 custom rifles built in the last 5 yrs.

22-6MM AI with 1 - 14 twist. Shooting 50 gr Blitzkings 4280 fps. I hold on fur out to 475 yds

6MM BRX with 1 - 8 twist. Shooting 107 Sierra matchkings

6MM AI with 1 - 13 twist. Shooting 55 gr Blitzking 4200 fps.

260 Rem with 1 - 8 twist. Shooting 120 gr Matchkings

6.5 x 284 with 1 - 8 twist. Shooting 140 GR Sierra BTHP, I have two of these.

They have either a Brux or Kreiger barrel. All built by machinist not a gunsmith. And I couldn't ask for anything better. The work is good and fast turn around. I have Lee Gardner thread and install barrels and chamber. I use Remington 700 action. Here is a break down of a custom build from Lee.

Action 450.00

Barrel 350.00 - 400.00

Thread and fit and chamber any caliber 275.00

Stock 300.00 - 500.00

Scope I run Burris 4.5 x 14 x 42 scope for hunting rifles.

To me what makes a custom rifle is Barrel and how it is fitted to action and the chambering. Everything else you can put on any other rifle and it may or may not shoot good. You can put a 200.00 trigger on and a 500.00 stock and 1000.00 scope and it still may not shoot as good as you would want. And to get most rifles to shoot good you have to load your own shells.

Stock bedded

Trigger

All this chat on small pill bullets is fun. I been running a 22-6mm CJ 12 twist 45 to 53 grain bullets. Have to get the better brand bullets they do go sideways in target if not. Alot of work reloading them turning necks etc... I am a speed freak and best chronograph load was 4426fps 27" tube. With good scope. What you shoot you can see the hit, quite fun. On the third barrel now. I did try those 30-06 loads with plastic housed 55 grain bullets not very accurate. Another great gun builder is Allen Precision Shooting in Montana I have his 7mm Allen magnum shooting 160 grain 3550fps. Dad told me speed kills was that drugs maybe.
