Here ya go.
The lake is as healthy as I've ever seen it and it shows by all teams pretty much limiting out.
Some very impressive weights like we've never seen before, like 31.25 lbs in one day! Bet those guys are wishing they had a 5th fish on the first day.
Congrats to Jesse and Justin for winning it all and taking 2nd last year, thats one hell of an accomplishment against a damn good field of anglers!
Beulah puts on a heck of a good contest!

Looks like all the 2nd place team needed was a 15 incher to toss in on day one! Gotta sting a bit. Congrats on the solid finish Chad. That was a monster field.

What’s the rule on how many fish you can have in the boat before you have to quit fishing?

this looks like a weigh 5 fish per day.. the ones i used to do they didnt care how many you have in the well nor do they check em. So i would come in at 8 fish with this type of tourney. pick my best 5 throw em in the bag.

This may be a dumb question but not the first or last I will ever ask…

At the end of the day, does each team keep the fish they caught and did or did not weigh?

They will take the extras.

Meh I have seen bigger weights in Wyoming tournaments. Not sure why there are not more big fish in Sak with all that smelt

Makes me think of the guy I encountered on my last Sak ice outing this year. He talked about all the 40+ inch pike he used to spear in that bay, and in the next breath lamented that he just doesn't see those big pike like he used to. Hmmm, you don't say?

These tournaments send 200+ boats out to kill the biggest fish they can find. Even with high growth rates those fish take over a decade to reach into the 25+ inch range. Some in the recreational crowd are guilty too, certainly not just tournaments. But to say killing big fish doesn't impact numbers of big fish in the system is foolish.

if i remember corrrectly they stocked 7 million in one year of fingerlings. The g and f have the power (greggy) to do anything they want. Low water is more than a threat ---- what happens if the water gets to low -the smeltos die out.

NO STATE DOES 7mil in stocking except here.

Sak is a zig zag

I would be more worried about the the smaller classes. I couldnt catch a fish under 16" when i was up on the lake a few weeks ago. I would not worry about anything to be real honest.

pike do not like low water levels. They go rogue.

Wouldn't that suggest there are plenty of bigger fish in the lake? I mean, if the average joe is cleaning a limit of 4-10 lb fish, they should be easy to find, right?

In reality, walleyes in particular tend to hang out with fish of similar size. I don't know exactly why that is often the case, but we've all had days where we've caught nothing but fish below 14 inches, and other days where everything we catch is north of 22 inches. The trick to winning these tournaments is to find where the bigger fish are hanging out and figuring out what they are feeding on, not sorting through an assortment of 50 fish ranging in size from 13-30 inches. Sometimes the tournaments just aren't being held in the parts of the lake with an abundance of the structure the biggies are frequenting. That's why NDGF does test nettings. Random test nets are intended to provide the fisheries people a glimpse into the overall structure of the population. Tournaments are a poor substitute for test netting.

I don't think anyone could argue that Sak has many times more fishing pressure than a lake like Fort Peck; it has to play a role even though Sak is huge. On the other hand if the water goes down the fish will go away anyway so might as well get while the getting is good.

I think everyone has already forgot how awesome fishing was four years ago when everyone was ripping limits of 20"+ fish from the lake. Then the next 3 years everyone was bitching that they couldnt find fish over 14" to throw in the livewell. Cant wait to hear those stories again starting next year.
