We got water now!! Thunder storm rolled in around 5:30 and at 6:30 a friend that lives a mile and a half SW of me said he had 2"s in the rain gauge. When looking out the window with the wind, it looked like a hurricane. Had a few dime sized hail stones pinging off the windows and deck once in a while. The rain stopped at 8:15, cussing somewhere around 3"s.
Hope my cucumbers can pick themselves up out of the mud after taking a pounding like that.

Might sound crazy but take water hose and spray lightly to get mud off leaves.

...THE FLOOD ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 1000 AM CDT FOR
SOUTHERN WARD AND NORTHEASTERN MOUNTRAIL COUNTIES...

At 821 AM CDT, thunderstorms with very heavy rain have exited the
warned area, including the city of Minot. Although the rain has
ended, it will still take time for water to make it`s way through
the drainage systems in the city of Minot and other municipalities.
Be alert to additional thunderstorm activity that may develop later
today.

So is there any particular reason why all my squash and gourds are producing only female flowers with no males to give he them a hand? Is this possibly a fertilization issue or they're just being dicks?

Something needs to die!

Have been picking cucumbers for around 10 days. The last 5 or 6 days have had a few bite marks in some of them. Nothing major until last night. Thinking it’s a gopher, rabbit or a mouse.
Can anyone guess by looking at the pictures?

Those are 8 to 10 inch cucumbers

All three have those chisel front teeth but I have caught stripped gophers stealing cucumbers out of my garden and the bigger cucumbers had the same type chewing going on. 12ga with 8 shot took care of the problem.

I typically water the garden between 6:30 and 7 in the morning before I go to work and see nothing running out when I water. If it was a stripped gopher you think I would see it sometime during the day in the yard. The garden has a fence around it, chain-link on one side and the 2"x3"x 24" fence on 2 sides and a wooden fence on the other side. I am guessing its almost 99% rabbit proof. Put out some mouse and gopher bait, will see how that does.

If your area is a little dry those vermin like cucumbers more for the water than anything else.

Not sure what these are, but they were all growing in a row in my garden so Im guessing they must be used for something...

So yesterday, I look out the window, and there's a big grey squirrel running across the yard with our first ripe heirloom in his freaking mouth. Other less ripe heirlooms had chew marks in previous days - one was ruined. I can guarantee you that was that squirrel's last pilfer.

In addition, little red bastard (LRB) squirrels have been observed pulling this same BS in previous years.

So don't discount the likelihood that squirrels are responsible for damaging your produce - even the less sinister larger ones.

Wife took care of a raccoon this morning while I was getting tires put on our f150. 22mag right dead center on the mask and then 2 more until he quit kicking. Left the body in the driveway for me to take care of. She was proud as hell of her shooting skills.

Cutting the suckers off of my sweetcorn today and side-dressing some 10-10-10- . This will give me 2 good cobs per plant instead of one. I plant Silver Queen, which is a all white sweet corn that we prefer over yellow or peaches and cream. Plants are about ready to tassel and are about 6ft tall. I side dress with 10-10-10- again when ears are starting to form and we get cobs that fill nicely all the way. Don't have to use so much garden space to get the amount of sweet corn we need for canning this way. Electric fence for keeping the masked raiders out will be going up in about 2 weeks. We plant our corn a little late so it is ready first part of Sept. little cooler for canning. Might be a little later this year because of the cool nights.
