That’s Morel Mushroom Boy. Very cool Instagram follow but he ain’t from around here. As far as dedication goes, you don’t know the half of it. You know how some snow goose hunters will head to Texas in the late winter and follow the migration all the way up? He does that for morels.

Ahh, that would make sense.

The wife tried her luck today and found a few. Not in our normal spots but they are starting to come up in places that get more sun.

I'm guessing a couple more weeks before I start to get out. I'm always looking when I'm out turkey hunting and haven't run across any yet. I'm going to see if the asparagus is up that should be any day.

I just looked and I only have one jar of morels left. Hopefully soon.
how do you store them that you have 1 jar left?

I cut them in half wash in sink with cold water then put in strainer and let drip dry. Then I put in dehydrator untill dried. After that a just put them in mason jars. Never had any problems with them after drying. If I'm putting them in chili I just crush them up a little bit and toss in. If i want to fry them in butter I soak them in warm water for about 30 min and they come back to the original size. Flavor isn't as good but it works.

Took the hids out for a little bit this afternoon. Didn't venture to far but found quite a bit. Most were in areas where we found picked stems. Definitely a good day with the kids.

Went out for a little bit on Friday afternoon but never found a thing. Lots of down/dead trees, but there is so much under growth and new growth that I'm beginning to wonder if I'm looking in the wrong spots. The grass is so thick that spotting anything is going to be difficult. I'm sure they can be found in areas like this, but a lot of the pictures I'm seeing are usually more open with less (or at least shorter) grass.

the only "brush" you'll normally find morels in is prickly ash - that's always a hoot to pick them in (eyeroll)

other than that morels are generally open ground (grass and forest floor plants might hide them) around the root areas of host trees like dead/dying elms, quaking aspen stands (which contain a mix of live, dead, dying), etc.

remember that the morels are just the "flower" that is sprouting out of the fungi that's living in symbiosis with a host tree's roots

One step closer to the end.
Request to the pros at finding these morels.

Can you take several photos and post them showing what terrain looks like that you are finding said morels? (please not just a "close up" of the ground ha)

Thanks a bunch.

That would give the spots away a little too much for my liking Maddog.

For those of you that do the asparagus thing well out looking for morels what's the general area 10 to find them in? Like would this be something that can be found in the bottom Land South of Bismarck or better up in the fields and draws?

Ahh the beauty of the interweb - Providing countless hours of trial and error down to others not willing to try and do something on their own. Fishing, hunting, trapping, camping - can it be that mushrooms has become the final frontier of internet scouting??!!

Thinking about taking the afternoon off and heading out. Not really liking this heat, but this might be the last chance if these temps stay like this. Anyone want to tag along? Bismarck/Mandan area.
