2637 Prairie dogs shot during the 25th annual Shields/Selfridge hunt on June 10th 2017

30 two man teams participated. Here's the top seven finishers as published in The Grant County News on June 28, 2017.

1. 230 prairie dogs shot by T.J. Ternes and Raymond Ternes. $500 prize.

2. 188 prairie dogs shot by Ken and Nathan Hooker. $350 prize.

3. 172 prairie dogs shot by Al Schauer and Troy Howard. $300 prize

4. TIE 171 Prairie dogs shot by Dion Feigitisch and Todd Bodvig $262.50 prize

4. Tie 171 prairie dogs shot by Larry Gellner and Perry Weiner. $262.50 prize.

6. 155 prairie dogs shot by Thomas Sperr and John Trutnau $225 prize

7. 126 prairie dogs shot by Cody Gustafson and Roger Hille $200 prize.

A total of 2637 prairie dogs were shot in this, the 25th year of the hunt. In the entire 25 years of the hunt 73,554 prairie dogs have been shot.

After the hunt a grilled steak supper was served followed by a raffle drawing.

Seems like a big harvest to me.

As a little boy, my son was real good friends with the young man (and neighbor at that time) that took first place.

Seems like there is a little prairie dog problem in that area. Sounds like a good time may have been had by all. Good Hunting!!

Was in that shoot in the early years and it was a real blast literally speaking. Placed 3rd one year shooting 22-250 in rem 788 not bad for a 180 dollar gun. They drew for which town you shot on and it seamed to me it was a lot to do with how big a town you got. More dogs the higher the body count, Ha Ha. And the steak supper and dance after was just as much fun. Watched the sun come up the next morning really hurt the eye balls but was worth it.

No matter how you slice it, that's a lot of Prairie Dogs and sounds like a fun day. Not familiar to the area but "branding iron" sounds like a waterhole. Can't imagine a day like that without stopping for at least 1. Wait a minute, it it's only going to be 1, make it a pitcher.

I also was in it the early years. One thing I'd do different is bring more than 1 gun, as shooting that many rounds seems to heat the barrel. Really fun time seeing blood splatter n sod puppies flying in the air through the scope. I grew up in that area n moved after I graduated high school.

I got in it about 15 years ago. It seems these numbers are low compared to that year. The town you draw is a huge factor. Its kinda gross piling up dead pdpgs in the heat. Plus you gotta make sure they don't make it back down the hole. Lost a few off our count with that and finding pieces of young ones big enough to be counted.

When I was in the hunt, we put a trebble hook on the end of a pretty long stick to snag the ones out of the hole that fell back in after u blasted them. Worked pretty good.
