I heard the ice was off on Ashtabula so I went for a drive to check it out. I have to say I was extremely disappointed to see the amount of winterkill washed up on the shore by the Sibley area. I have heard reports that the Corp of Engineers had lowered the pre ice out water levels to the point that there was absolutely no water under the ice on the north side of the lake; even in the channel. I have seen the Corp do this in the past but not to this extreme I wondered if this even necessary given the fact that the Sheyenne River is not all that high. I seen 2 boats out on the water today and the locals told me it was the Corp accessing the damage (not sure that is true or not). Either way, seems like a waste that could've been avoided.

Yeah the COE drains that thing every winter whether there is heavy snow pack or not. They are scared shitless after '97 even though they are supposed to be able to hold back even more water now. I have never seen a severe fish kill on it before though. This year might have been different, I haven't been down there for awhile. The Sheyenne is high up by Cooperstown so there's water coming.

I would have to say that from my experience with this lake it is that it is now at its normal level. What I was astounded by was the amount of clams that were dead and washed up on shore. This leads me to believe that they did drain the north end down to nothing. Where I was at in the Sibley area it smelled like a sewer.
