I'm trying to up my walleye game in hopes of having greater success with Son No. 1 this winter. So, I do what comes natural, which is to turn to the interweb and start googling "How To Ice Fish Walleyes."

Most of it is same-old, same-old. I've fished walleyes my whole life, so I'm not a complete novice. But I'm always on the lookout for new information, or at least new-to-me information. Specifically with locations...this is my greatest weakness.

But there is one "tip" that rears its head in every, single, damn walleye ice fishing article and it drives me absolutely nuts: Start ice fishing where you found them in the fall. This is followed by absolutely no insight into what those locations may be.

OH! Thanks for that! It's not like I hunt from September to January every year. By all means, I'll just go back in time and go walleye fishing in October, the absolute pinnacle of bird hunting season, so I'm prepared for ice fishing come January. Yes. Lovely.

OK, lame rant I know. And really, I'm not that mad. Just have to chuckle a bit. To me, the "fall fishing spots for ice fishing" is hands down the worst "tip" that keeps getting regurgitated over and over.

On that note, feel free to behest your greatest non-lame walleye tips for all to read. I'm hoping to increasing my lifetime winning percentage. As it stands, I'm basically the Cleveland Browns of walleye ice fishing.

I have always had the best luck catching eyes in the same area I was catching them in late fall. Seems like they don't move a whole lot from the late fall to early ice.
Best of luck to ya.

Problem solved for me. I use a house set up by an outfitter. I only go about 3 or 4 times a year so I do not need to own a bunch of stuff. Cheaper to go with an outfitter and have the bare minimum of equipment. This works best for me. Sorry I am no help.

Inside bends, quick drop offs, rock/mud transitions. Find structure locations in the spring and summer and drop a waypoint on them. That's the structure they're going to use in the fall....winter.

You are on the right track. Since you got no fall-walleye-slaughtering-grounds, talk NICELY to those who do.

I'm no hunter, can't help you much since I fish the river more than any other places, but you're doing the right thing.

I tend to find them in similar spots as last ice fishing season. 60% of the time, it works every time.

no...follow capt ahad for a day...just act like your lost, when he stops drills a hole, pull up next him, drill a hole, and smile, wave at him and say "hi ho neighbor"...if he moves...you move...ask him for a beer and say something like..."mine aint cold enough yet"..but most of all...don't take your eye of him, he's got lots of secrets when it comes to ice fishing, then when he starts catching them, yell..'hey thats my fish, put that back"........ just sayin....

Waaaaay ahead of you. That's Ice Pirating 101. I've been tracking Ahab for years, however he hasn't hit any of the lakes I want to fish. But if I stretch my legs a bit and head his direction, I have plenty of waypoints at the ready. :;:muahaha

There's a spot on a lake I like to fish that's always hot in late June. It's a finger flat that's halfway down one of the bigger droops. I think it's about 20-22 FOW. It's just a muck bottom, but it might be worth a shot. It's also about 3/4 of a mile from the landing. Bit of a hike, but oh well. The kid is light and I'm leaving the gas auger at home.

I'd start by quit fishing those shitty Minnesota lakes

Drop of a name of a decent walleye lake within an hour of Fargay on the North Dakota side and I'll definitely give it a try. Everything I've heard of or been told is 2 hours, minimum. If I'm going to drive that far, I might as well fish Red Lake. Or Devils.

by my calculations, devils is approximately 5-6 beers (or 2 hours) from fargo. if the trip is begun with an entirely empty bladder, things work out perfectly. most other lakes are going to be a good 3 beers (or 1 hour) away. which means devils cost you 2 hours more round trip. however, you gain at least 4 more beers and likely an additional 15 inches of walleye (3 inches per fish). seems like a good trade off to me. however, the trip home could be a bit sketchy.

Best advise I every got was fish lakes that have a lot of walleyes in them and fish lakes that are small enough where you can manage your approach and limit the number of locations the fish might be.

Actually, I seldom travel more than an hour and a half one way for birds. Most of the time I'm inside an hour. But I know what you mean.

Whilst waiting at the boat landing dock holding the boat while my buddy returned from parking the trailer, a boat comes up to the landing back from fishing. I was attempting to trade pleasantries.... how you guys doing? have any luck? Any particular depth, location? To which the one fella says, " you got a boat, you figure it out! "...I was left temporarily speechless to offer an equally smart ass response. Hahahaa.. figured the guy for sure couldn't have been an NDA member..hahhahahaa.
