I was cleaning out my shed and found about 30 pounds of casting lead, including 15 or so of unrefined linotype.
Make an offer.

Back in the 70's I did a lot of casting for .357 and .44, mostly with lead, very little wheel weights. I got lucky at Fargo Iron and Metal and picked up a bucket of linotype slugs, still have some of those.
Back then I used the thumbnail hardness test, seemed to work ok. Other than the linotype slugs, what I have is in hard cast slip sinkers of various weights.
I also have the old electric melting pot that I'd throw into the deal.

The lead I used was from 10 lb. ballast ingots that my brother picked up near the Blanchard TV tower, apparently they fell out of the helicopter that hit one of the guy wires.

Slightly OT: I have about 5lbs of spent airgun pellets I've collected over the years. Are these worth a shit for recasting?

Only if you add antimony and tin. Lyman #2 alloy calls for ( hmm haven't had my coffee yet) I think 5% antimony and 5 or 10% tin. I can't remember because tin got so expensive I only use 1%. Wheel weights are about 3.5 % antimony, but you can get by with it if you keep velocity under 1200 fps.

Put a gas check on the back for more velocity.

But they would work for a .73 punkin' ball?

Bonus:

Sometimes I do. If I am going to use it for deer I will keep the lead at about 16 on the hardness scale and gas check it so it will expand. If I carry it in the mountains for protection I add antimony and tin to bring hardness to 22 and push velocity to the max. 10mm 200 gr at 1400 fps and in my 45/70 with falling block I have shot a 405 gr cast to 2200 fps. My normal load is a 300 gr cast at 1900 fps.
