Partridge in the yard

I've never seen roosters kill a hen but have watched them run the hens off the food a lot and the hens look a lot thinner than the roosters in hard winters. I like to thin the roosters off the feed piles if the winter gets tough just to give the hens a break. Reminds me of how old does and bucks sometimes will chase fawns off of bait piles.

What is wierd is I see 10 male to one female never figure that out with pheasant's

yeah you never know I walked 2 small sloughs today , first one was all hens probably 25 of them . Next one was all roosters picked up 3 quick ones and another 15 or so flew out

Roosters will kick the hens out of good cover too. They're kind of assholes to be honest.

Many times I've flushed only roosters or only hens out of certain areas that normally hold both.

USUALLY the roosters are in the typically "good cover" areas in the winter.

I USUALLY find hens everywhere.

I should clarify. This is typically late season, after some snow and cold. More snow and cold is usually proportional to more roosters in the "good areas" and less to no hens.

Although up in Pembina it's all good. Go figure....

I had partridge in my yard this am, too. Pretty cool. Haven’t seen presence of owls yet, think I’d have to let that ride. Now, put a coyote (or drone) in the same space, and it’s light-em-up time.

Probably a lot of truth in that.

Dad said straw piles and corn shocks fed the birds through the winter. And there was still native grass and sloughs for winter cover. Pretty much gone now.

I am shocked when I am out , how many Partridge there are in the middle of nowhere this time of year . When I was kid they were all around the farmyards by now picking thru the cow shit and any straw bales etc we had

I hunted a ravine that had 6 coveys of huns last week most flushed wild, i did get one.

I remember the early 60's before 66 we would have 100's if not 1000's of phesants come feed in our cow yard, they were like chickens just getting out from under foot. Feed our cattle a lot of silage so there was plenty of whole kernal corn to pick out of the crap. LB

Use an old door or anything you can get your hands on. Make a table about 12 to 18 inches high and throw some grain under it. If all you can get is a 30x81 inch hang some pieces of rope along the narrow sides.
