We are going to make a trip to the Wahpeton area soon, and I want to target some catfish. Is the fishing down there similar to Fargo? Do the catfish get as big? How hard is it to find goldeye there?
Thanks, i wasn't sure cause the river looks skinnier down thereI'm not familiar with the Red at Wahpeton. In general, the cats get bigger the farther north you go, not sure how big in Wahpeton. I do know people catch walleye, northern, and other species though.
Any chance at walleye in late July?My grandpa used to catch some 10-18 lbers around the wahp breck area back in the 70's-80s using cut bait and sucker minnows. We never really focused on the big ones when we went down there we would dig worms out of grandmas garden then ride bikes to the river and catch a bunch of 1-4lb cats and a bunch of junk fish. Once we realized there were walleye in there, we caught quite a few of them casting cranks and jigs and plastics, especially when the water was running better in the spring. I haven't been down there in 15 years so i don't have any recent info but fishing the red was one of my favorite things to do when we were down there.
^^Can anyone help CH out with some intel?^^

Thank you, was that the dam on the otter tail? Or the big river? When I went to College down there we normally fished below the dam on the northeast side of town. Caught mostly smallies and nice ones at that, couple walleye's. Got some decent cats between the dam and boat launch. Only thing is that was in the spring like April May 20yrs ago and I have never gone back to try it since. Damn you @CatDaddy for reminding me how old I am these days.
Okay thank youIt's the Red. In the picture you can see the damn location. There used to be spots all along the ND side that you could fish from. Farthest we ever went was the boat landing and I don't think I ever fished above the damn.
