Some friends and I had a discussion about what it takes for a perch to be labeled a "Jumbo". I have been asked about Jumbo perch many times and to this day I'm not real sure what that means. I myself think that any perch that is 12 inches or longer is a Jumbo. However, the requirements vary somewhat between fishermen. So I ask the peanut gallery. What's a Jumbo Perch??

I guess I’ve never really put a size limit on it. It’s always just kind of been a you know it when you see it type thing. Sometimes those 10.5-11 inch fish start to get the hump behind their head and when you fillet them the belly goes wide into the fillet. That’s some of the things I start to say there’s a jumbo.

In Ontario a perch 10'' and bigger is a Jumbo. I call a Jumbo here in ND anything 12'' and over.
Just a big yellow perch basically.

I thought pics might be useful for this thread. There are 8 "Jumbos" in this pic according to my standards.

ND Whopper patches yellow perch 1#12oz. Or 13 inches unfortunatly living in devils lake north dakota 14 3/4 wasnt good enough for a whopper patch for lunker
There is urban legend of a local catching a 17" jumbo in Irvine years ago.

A pound and a half perch used to be a whopper but it was too easy so they raised the bar a few notches.
