So I can't seem to find any logical answers as to why in the hell you would ever drive on the river....especially when you are literally saving only about 10 yards of walking. Perhaps a bad back or some other physical limitations but even then you're not saving enough ground to make it even remotely worth it. Then there's the fact that that spot is in the turbulent water just behind the small jetty at the ramp that will definitely cause highly variable ice thickness in just a matter of feet.

In the late 60', early 70's there were many fish houses between Memorial and the railroad bridge. There wasn't much current. Times have changed with the addition of ripraff.

Drifting the high plains
When I was a kid our farm was on the Sheyenne River. We drove four miles on the river where it was deeper and had seven springs coming to the river in about 400 yards. We always stopped short on the upriver side of the springs. We had to chop a hole with an axe in those days so one hole each was it. One day this neighbor shows up with his fancy new spoon auger. He drives up close to the spring walks even closer and dug a hole. He starts hollering back the ice depth, but never finished because it gave way and he went in. The springs all had sort of a delta so the water was only about two feet deep, but he stood there screaming as if he was dying. We had to drag him out before he had a coronary.

If you test the ice conditions beforehand and they're good, no biggie. Just driving out "blind", not good.

Unless that guy has 1oz jigs on, his lines are probably swung up to the bottom of the ice. I can't believe the ice isn't all chunked up there.

I seen a guy walking out on the ice by the highway bridge this weekend and someone was taking a picture of him.......Death wish my guess. just how many brain cells do you have taking the chance of going down in current.

Honestly, I'm guessing that if a Law Enforcement Officer were to saunter out there, he or she would find a highly inebriated individual who would say "hey, I'm not driving".

A LOT of the dumbest things people do, can be chalked up to an altered state of mind.

I agree with you though... Aside from the fact that that snazzy Taurus GL Wagon would probably land on the ramp, there is no good reason I can see for driving on the river.

Tell you a little story about that location from when I was much much much younger and dumber. Me and a buddy decided to fish overnight at that almost exact location. We started just around dark and fished until about 0200 in the morning and then decided to pack up and go have breakfast at the Drumstick Café, this may date the timeframe for some of you locals from Bismarck. We went and ate breakfast and came back about 0500 and the ice had broken away and where we were fishing was mostly open water. Can only imagine what would have happen if we hadn't went and had breakfast, probably would have set sail for SD, ice was well over a foot when we drilled out holes. The rock jetty has been upgraded since that time. This was one of my 3 grow up and respect the ice when ice fishing moments. dukgnfsn

Edit: we never drove on there but had a portable set up while we were fishing.

That's a good story. Truth.

In the summer, even if the ramp were not being used, I would never swim right where that wagon parked. Current is wonky..

What the hell is Ripraff?

Guessing he meant rip-rap.

Now if DB meant Rif-Raf that would be the trailer trash or the losers that followed the oil workers to ND back in the boom.

We used to say the cold ND winters kept the Rif-Raf out of here but not true anymore!

Yeah alcohol definitely wouldn't surprise me and needless to say being in that spot is going to be bucking some serious current.
