Found this bug in my gutter today when I was cleaning them out. Anyone have a clue what it is? It was at least 2.5 inches long.

They bite. Learned that the hard way.

and they'll kill your minnows, frogs, tadpoles. Swamp kid's nemesis.

Yep giant water bug. They are very common around here and at this time of year they get drawn towards lighted areas. When I worked at bobcat in bismarck it was common to find a few just inside the garage doors at night if we had them part way open to let a breeze in. Some species can get very large.

They are listed to have one of the most painful bites of any insect on the planet but not poisonous.

Piercing sucking mouth parts, but of large diameter. I have had people working for me that have been poked. They belong to the family Belostomatidae. The backswimmers are much smaller and remind me of a skunk because of their stripe. Although smaller there are many more of them and people get bit often. A guy from Denver was working with me and I told him that because he was picking them with his fingers. He said "oh I have done it for years and never been bit". Famous last words. Less than ten seconds and he was yowling.
