[QUOTE="SDMF, post: 71503, member: 412"] They don't know what the make, model, SN or chambering of said firearm is, just whether it's a handgun or long-gun. I suspect that question is on the form for 2 reasons: #1. You are only allowed to take ownership of a handgun from an FFL dealer that is licensed within your state of residence. You can "buy" a handgun anywhere you darned well choose to, but, you can only take possession of it from an FFL dealer in your state. #2. You have to be 21 to buy a handgun vs. 18 for long guns. Please don't get me wrong for explaining the above, I think NICS is preposterous. Regarding the OP, it's not unreasonable to have an entire season's worth of ammo, well before season begins. That applies to any and all seasons/ammo. If you shoot trap/skeet/sporting clays, it's wise to have your supply before season begins, same for any other shooting leagues/competitions as well as any/all hunting seasons. If you don't shoot any organized events/leagues and don't hunt but like to shoot paper targets, tin cans, gophers, bowling pins, or what-haveyou it's never a bad plan to have a "season's worth" whatever that means for you. Call it a "summer's-worth" if that makes more sense. To me, ammo/reloading components are like any other household staple. We don't run out of milk, salt, sugar, laundry soap, shampoo, or toothpaste before we replenish. I use the same principle for ammo/reloading stuff. If you're shooting stuff you know is hard to get, you plan accordingly like you'd have to if you wanted king crab legs for a party over Labor Day 'cause you're likely not going into the local grocery store and buying them @ that time of year.
