db-2, you have read it many times on web-forums, posted by agitators, that ranchers pay little to nothing to lease school land. Here is a true story. Albert had the lease for decades. The fence belonged to him and there was no water on it. He solved that problem by piping/pumping water under the county road from his well. The lease comes up every five years and Albert forgot to be there one day. His neighbor Don rented it. Albert took down his fence and cut off the water. Don put up a brand new fence (sweat equity) and watered his cows from his own property. But then Don got into a four wheeler accident and died. Don's brothers took down the fence. Albert got the lease back and had to build another fence. (sweat equity) Albert died and his wife Larue sold the cows. She went shopping for someone to sublease to who would buy that new fence from her. She found Justin a beginning rancher. All was good until the five year lease went on the auction block. Joe from another town bid it through the roof. Justin asked Joe to buy the fence. Shyster Joe knew that Justin had 120 days to remove it or it would become the property of the State so he dragged his feet. At the very last minute Justin pulled his fence. So Joe put up a new one. AGAIN. (sweat equity) Larue didn't like how this turned out so she shut off the water from her property on the other side of the county road. So now the taxpayers have the highest bidder (Joe) for the lease but he is from out of the area so at taxpayer expense a well was drilled equipped with solar panels and large galvanized water tanks. The money to do this installation was picked from different pockets and government programs. It is going to take many years of higher rents for the State to recoup this investment. eyexer thinks it as simple as out bidding someone at a school land rental auction. Welcome to the neighborhood.
