A few months ago I listened to a radio or you tube segment regarding a study of gills and crappie in MN and thought it was an interesting theory, I just wish I knew where or who it was. Basically lakes over run with tiny gills will tend to stay that way for reasons like food source availability but also the fact that they will mature earlier to spawn instead of growing to a larger size before beginning their reproduction life because there are no other mature fish to keep going. They also stated that gills are pretty consistent at successful spawn every year so age classes are not as spread out and more susceptible to over population, i thought of it as a reproduce like rabbits theory.Obviously there are other factors involved but that is the just of it. When it comes to crappie it is similar but they do not necessarily have a successful spawn every year so the age classes are more easily noticed in size variations. Not sure if I explained it correctly like I heard it but this should be fairly close cliff notes of it - - - Updated - - - I also think the study was mostly being done in Southern MM - - - Updated - - - MN
