Achucker I have had groups like that before, and most times it was the scope. I paid $1300 for a Leupold years ago that about drove me up a wall. Leopold sent me a new scope that I never took out of the box and sold it for $800. That scope had two nice groups 1.5 inch apart. I put on a 30 year old Bushnell 3x9 that I paid under $50 for and shot a .35 inch group. I have run through many scopes of many makes. Quality control is terrible at Nikon. I have a half dozen that are accurate and one very accurate Nikon that gave me fits for a while. I run my load over three different chronographs and could not get my program to work. Finally I discovered that when I dialed 20 inches I actually got 21. Try a group with a different scope no matter how expensive, or how new, or what brand they can fail. The only other thing I can think of is the warm barrel contacted the stock and shifted, but stabilized. I had a light weight 3⁰ Win mag that grouped 1.5 inch. I free floated it and it shot 2.5 inch. I started pushing business cards between the stock and barrel at the very end of the stock. zWith four business cards it grouped .4 inch, but with five it opened up again. I cut narrow straps of those cards and bedded the forend with the cards back slightly so I coukd remove them. That rifle I gave to my son, and he left it to his son. It still shoots very well for such a light rifle.
