I think you will see the vaccines be embraced more and more as time passes. There are two things right now in my mind that are hurdles for those who want to have faith in it but remain on the fence. 1) A general lack of trust in the government or in just about anything these days...people don’t like doing stuff just because “somebody says so”. If the message is delivered from someone you trust, it’s likely you can put some stock in it. When it is delivered from someone who you don’t trust...well it’s a lot harder for some people to go all in. 2) lack of long term data on COVID in general and on the COVID vaccines. It’s a lot easier to place your bet on a lot of info proven over time, and we just don’t have that right now. Many of the providers I work with list this as their own biggest hang-up as well as the biggest hurdle they have when discussing this vaccine to younger, healthier patients - EVEN those who have seen COVID wreak havoc on loved ones. Some of you are quick to draw a parallel with someone who isn’t sure about getting the vaccine yet to someone who doesn’t give a shit about anyone but themselves. People like to make informed decisions when it comes to their health and the health of their loved ones. With all of the misinformation available on just about everything these days it is not so easy to do that anymore. Having your peers try ramming their own misinformed opinion down your throat in the manner of a guilt trip doesn’t help matters either. I could add that as the third hurdle to getting people on board with getting vaccinated. Think about how that makes you all feel when we talk about gun ownership. Some people think the safest bet for the population as a whole would be for all of the law-abiding citizens to turn in all of their firearms but selfish bastards like us are the lingering problem. We are ruining it for everyone because we only care about ourselves. Meanwhile we look at them as idiots who know nothing about the topic while they spew uninformed, misguided, skewed stats and info. I know I’m comparing apples to oranges - but the approach is the same so it’s easy for me to see why it’s not working. I’m not telling ANYONE not to get the vaccine. I’m just stating why I think a lot of people currently are passing on it.
