And a cooler big enough to run two feed carts in. The two old guys that ran the ranch had some pretty amazing stories over the years. There was a rail road track that ran about a block from the ranch. Back in the 70's they still hauled cattle via rail. They had a derailment right close to the ranch. Cattle loose all over, most if not all had broken limbs. Sheriff just walked around and shot the crippled ones. The old guys ended up making a deal with the railroad to get the cattle for free as long as they cleaned it all up and there was nothing left for them to clean up. So someone from the railroad came to check it out. The old guy showed him his personal freezer and found nothing but store bought. [QUOTE="eyexer, post: 240879, member: 315"] I worked on that ranch in high school. They had 16,000 then. We only had half that the ranch would hold. That's 16,000 individual cages lol. It took hours everyday just to feed em. Couple hours to grind the feed and clean up. We had an 80 ton walk in freezer. And they had to guarantee the railroad they would not consume themselves or sell any. The ranch had about a half dozen employees then. So they want to work skinning and butchering cattle. Called in all their buddies and whoever they could get to come. There were about a 100 cows so it was a ton of work. One of the old guys said they would cut off a hind quarter and drop it in the grinder bones and all and it wouldn't even draw down. Just spit the damn thing out in to a box lol. They had that freezer plumb ass full. Of course the neighbors were pissed as hell they couldn't have any to eat. So they started telling the railroad that the ranch was consuming the beef. So someone from the railroad came to check it out. The old guy showed him his personal freezer and found nothing but store bought. Then he took him to the walk in freezer and had him run his hand across the freshly ground meat. He said that's all I need to see. You could feel the boon shavings in it. He knew it couldn't be eaten then. About the time I took over the ranch 99% of the mink growers had switched to pelleted feed. The old boys wouldn't let me do it because they claimed it wouldn't raise as nice of fur.
