I think the current system for 11-14 year olds is great. I also think it's important for kids to realize early on that nothing in life is guaranteed and that it is seldom fair. Those that learn to adapt and work harder than everyone else are the ones that succeed. In todays world of instant gratification, I think it's important for parents to teach their kids that just being outdoors is 99% of the fun. Harvesting a buck or any deer for that matter is just a bonus. Getting into archery is pretty cheap now, I bought my son a bow that will fit him from 11 until he is out of high school, I think I had 4 different bows in that time. If you knock on enough doors, eventually you will find somebody that says yes. That doesn't mean it will be good enough ground to kill a deer every year, but at least they will be outside learning life long lessons. What good is it doing your kids to just sit back and bitch about not getting a rifle BUCK tag when you could easily get a rifle doe tag. Even if it's not in your home unit, make it an adventure and travel a 100 miles for a weekend. They will enjoy that a hell of a lot more than sitting on the couch with nothing because you think it's important they get a buck tag.
