[QUOTE="Retired Educator, post: 129073, member: 3373"] The brain does work in mysterious ways and this theory certainly qualifies as strange in my book. I have a hard time thinking that people like paying taxes or that someone works harder knowing that they are going to pay taxes. In my mind people cheat on their taxes because they think they have already paid enough. I worked at a job most of my life where my salary was paid by taxes collected from others. Of course over all those years I also paid my share of taxes. It would be easier for me to accept a statement such as "people don't mind paying a fair tax when they know the taxes are being used wisely or for a common good." For example, most of us realize that we expect some things to be paid for by either local, state, or national entities. Paying for those things require some sort of tax collection to pay the bill. For example: We drive on roads and expect them to be maintained, we expect police protection and understand the need to pay for those services. I was a teacher and people expect an education for children and realize there are expenses involved. The problem arises when we think our hard-earned money is being used in a wasteful manner. Now is where most of the tax arguments start. What is wasteful spending? Different for everyone. Some would prefer to drive on dirt or gravel roads while others want pavement. Some think a teacher such as myself was overpaid, after all "They only work 9 months a year." I caused a pretty good argument one time when a farmer told me that and I reminded him of his neighbor who farmed the same amount of land and held another full time job to fill his spare time. Taxes are a necessary evil. The key is to make sure the taxes are fair to all and I'm not sure how to define fair as there are always going to differences on what is necessary and what is a waste.
