Message: <blockquote data-quote="gonefshn" data-source="post: 126332" data-attributes="member: 380"><p>The thing is that there is racism on both sides.  There always has been and probably always will be to some degree.  But if you look back at the history of our country I believe you'll find there is less with every generation and that's all we can do is to try to keep improving.  Maybe if those who keep bitching about it would lead by example they might actually be able to improve things even more.  Instead, I've always found those who are at the forefront (the Reverends, AIM leaders, and such) tend to be by far much more racists than any of us supposed white racists.  The way I see it is when I can walk around in a totally black, Hispanic, Native American, or other supposed downtrodden people's neighborhoods and be treated as just another human instead of being harassed, beaten, or killed, then you have the right to preach to me about how I might not treat you properly in my neighborhood.  And actually, the one thing I know for sure is that if one of these individuals were to be wandering around in my neighborhood they might look out of place to us and at most we'd ask them why they were there or maybe call the police to investigate.  I don't think the same would happen in one of their neighborhoods.  I also owe no one ANYTHING for the past, nor does anyone owe me anything because of what they might have done to my ancestors.  We are all born with a blank slate.  I wish I was born to a rich Saudi prince or a Bill Gates.  I wasn't.  I was born poor just like most people in this world.  I got to where I am by working and studying hard.  I could have sat on my ass having fun every night, skipped school to go get f'd up, and then blamed everyone else for my not being rich or privileged.  I didn't.  And it doesn't matter what color, race, or ethnicity you are.  If you decide you want a better life and are willing to study and/or work hard for it, this country has millions of opportunities just waiting for you.  But if you sit on your ass bitching about everyone else and how the "system" is against you, the only system that you have the right to blame is the one in your head.</p></blockquote><p></p>
