I voted against the property tax referendum last time as I felt the structure / wording needed some refinement and hoping (not expecting) that our conservative republican legislature (if you don't believe me - just ask them) would provide meaningful property tax relief. Did not happen. While it didn't, they approved about every appropriation bill that came their way. In 2021 even approved $150 million for a natural gas pipeline that would carry natural gas to the proposed Chinese milling plant in GF. Legislator Ray Holmberg (Yup That Guy!) stated that this would be a "Legacy project that would serve the state for generations to come" (the Chinese wet mill). He went on to suggest that if that was not enough there would be more $$ available. Problem was no one applied for the grant. Just one of many examples where our legislature has absolutely no problem spending / wasting millions of YOUR tax dollars each session and doesn't seem to take property tax seriously. I believe that the two most regressive taxes that are levied are sales tax and property tax in that order. So what the hell did our legislatures do this last season but pass state income tax reduction that primarily benefits the wealthy. I have signed the property tax petition and will be voting in favor this fall. Only regret is that I wish it were to abolish sales tax which by far is the most regressive tax. Currently running about 8% (state, county, city, etc) in Bismarck and both Burleigh County and Bismarck are in the process of proposing increases. I believe that if the voters take action it will result in better decisions being made both at state and local levels. Just my $0.02.
Thread makes for an interesting read.
