No slots I don't personally keep many fish over 20 but if that's all I'm catching I'm going to take some home. Slots don't work just look at Mille lacs:;:stirthepot

I'd rather see time and $$ spent on fighting ANS like WY has. Your boat can't touch their water until a game warden has ensured there's no ANS liquid/debris on your boat, motor, or trailer, then you're given a permit/pass.

From the WY G&F site:

Regulations to Protect Wyoming's Resources

• Any watercraft transported into Wyoming from March 1 through November 30 must undergo a mandatory inspection by an authorized inspector prior to launching in any water of the state.

Any person transporting a watercraft who did not encounter a mandatory aquatic invasive species check station prior to reaching a water of the state may launch without further inspection if the watercraft has a properly affixed seal applied by an authorized inspector and is accompanied by a valid seal receipt during transit. The person transporting the watercraft may remove the seal immediately prior to launching on the destination water and must retain the seal and valid seal receipt while on the water.

While we're at it, If your boat is found to have potential ANS liquid/material, you're denied entry and must immediately exit ND with the potentially contaminated craft.

Slot limits have been PROVEN time and time again to NOT WORK!!!! How many studies need to be done to show this before this failed endeavor is sent to the bone pile??? Slot limits are a "touchy feely, lets all have a group hug" regulation that is difficult to enforce, costs revenue that could be spent elsewhere, and doesn't improve the fishing opportunities of the body of water that they are imposed upon. So in a nut shell, I'm against having a slot limit.

My wife limits my slots; generally at Spirit lake Casino and Sky Dancer so I guess the state doesn't need to.

Someone have the links to the GFPA VIDEOS about why ND doesn't need slots on the big 3?

I would think closing fishing season like they used to would help the spawning fish more than slots. might be kind of neat to get exited about fishing opener again.

From what I understand, and I'm no expert, the argument is that slot limits lead to the over harvesting of males and over time the male population declines to the point where eggs don't get fertilized. You need to take equal amounts of each (no slot limit) in order to keep things in balance.

Just what I've heard...makes sense if it's true.

When you stop and look at things. Prior to the 2011 flood, the Missouri was fished hard, and looks like it will get fished hard again this year and beyond. The Missouri continues to be a incredible fish factory in the face of tremendous pressure, as does Devils Lake. ND must be doing something right.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

The above article does a good job of explaining each. I fish a lake in W SD that has a slot. Lake was a minimum length lake but changed to a slot. It gets a ton of pressure and harvest. The slot has been good for fishing but not so much for those who like to keep fish. We now have a year class just under the slot that is providing take home fish. But, by this summer most will be in the slot.

There is way more than what we think that goes into it. Think about hooking mortality. Think about the impact one or two big fish has in the whole system. And the list goes on and on....

I leave it up to the professionals. I have fished lakes that have had minimum length, slots, and one over rules and have disliked and like each in certain cases. Just depends too much on the lake....

The fallacy about slots is that the spawning female is more important to the population than a female in say July. There is NO DIFFERENCE between taking a female out of the population in July or taking a female out of the population the day before she spawns as far as the sustainability of that population is concerned. Those fish are both EQUAL from a biological perspective. It's just OUR perception and feelings about the matter that gives the spring female more worth. Keep all the females you want in the spring. It makes no difference. To think that the entire population of walleyes within a body of water spawn within casting distance of a fisherman is completely delusional. ND has no closed season on walleye and I can't think of a single body of water where the walleye population has been reduced by hook and line angling to a degree where regulatory intervention has been necessary to keep the walleye population from crashing. The only place where size restrictions may be necessary are those bodies of water that can not support walleye spawning and are completely dependent upon stocking efforts. Otherwise, slot limits have proven to be worthless from a biological standpoint.

i'm no scientist, and have no real knowledge on the question... but the thing i've always wondered is how many who want slots, and are passionate about it, pass on the nice high quality bucks or bulls, and take maybe the best breeding buck or bull (genetically speaking) out of the herd instead of a small eater...

seems to me when you throw horns on, everything changes...

I don't blame you. I would be upset if I lived in SD. I release nice fish for a variety of reasons. Maybe a child will catch that same fish and enjoy the catch. I see no need to brag at a cleaning station.

While im not a big fan of slots I think the five fish limit is a bit excessive.

Slots have been tried in ND and did nothing to improve the fishing, at all. All the data available show a ND slot would only succeed at making some fishermen feel all warm n fuzzy inside.

There are thousands upon thousands of fish coming out of the river right now. It has never seen pressure like this where it's not going to end anymore. Every spring there will be hundreds of people. I don't think ndgf is use to that and someone can not say there is not damage in our population coming from this. This system is going to get ran into the ground. When every from the desert to cannon ball these spots are getting wiped out daily. Its kind of tough for these fish to stand a chance. When there is 40 boats choking off a whole section of the river how does a fish get past that with out getting caught. At least a slot would protect some of our trophy fish to have a chance to swim up here do their thing and come back down south.
