Just read a good article about how unused worms (bait) are changing northern ecosystems. Nightcrawlers are not native and can change local flora and fauna by changing the bottom of the food chain. Be careful where you "dispose" of unused bait. The local wildlife will thank you.

I always leave my crawlers in the fridge way to long, and eventually when unused they turn into a slurry of rancidness the world has never known. Then they get put into the trash receptacle and assume the process is over, however if NG would let me read the article I would know confirmingly if this process is part of the problem

Don't know whether it's good or bad but if you add some crawlers to your yard to have a steady supply you will most likely wish you had not tried that. The yard I have at my lake home has crawlers and is so rough it's hard to walk barefoot in the grass. Especially if the yard gets dry. The droppings or tailings or whatever they are called that crawlers emit is like walking on pearock. It's pretty easy to tell if there are crawlers in the area by how rough the grass is in the yard.

Just like those damn pheasants, huns and carp. Add another denomination to C&R. BTW, when I was a kid I-alone depleted every crawler in a ten acre radius of my house in two years. Didn't see viable return until I was near the end of my first hitch.
