Camping near Rapid City

Does anybody have any recommendations on where to camp with a tent, primitive or not, within 30 minutes or so of Rapid City? Gonna be going there the first weekend of June for a soccer tournament. Close access to fishable waters and hiking trails is a bonus.

Look at Pactola Dam out west of Rapid, while I haven't camped there...it would be high on my list with your wishes.

Within 30 minutes of RC gives you a ton of options. Stream fishing for trout through RC itself is a hidden gem. Pactola and Sheridan lakes are both good and offer multiple species of fish. There's camping right at Canyon Lake on the west side of RC. And opportunity to hook some sizeable trout. Rapid Creek along highway 44 and Spring Creek along Sheridan Lake road are both good trout streams. You can contact Dakota Angler Fly shop for fishing reports and supplies.

Pactola gets super busy. Check out Horsethief Campground. Primitive yet has what you need on site. Owners are fantastic and it’s in the middle of everything that has to do with the black hills.

Camped several times at Angostura Res. Great sandy beaches and warm water for the kids. We even caught a few walleye.

Sheridan Lake will get you good shore fishing and good camping, but primitive. Pactola may be a little busy with boaters and such that time of year.
