How are the lakes in the south central part of the state? Heading north across the border this weekend to visit family, am planning on bringing ice gear but am curious how the snow melt affected the lakes. Lost a TON of snow in the last week.

I was out on sakakawea on Monday night. The edges are slightly starting to open, the ice on the main lake is getting soft for the first 6-10 inches then it is fairly solid. I would not go over to any shorelines. It will be interesting to see what happens this year since the corp has not dropped the lake at all... yet

Not done yet here in SE ND. The next 15 days show some good promise regarding temps. I was on the ice tonight with a full sized pickup, no issues and after today, there won't be any for half a month at minimum. 30 inches of ice on Hobart with the first 12 slushy...here is how you know you are in trouble. Go out and start drilling your hole, stop halfway down and pull out the auger...if you start getting water rushing in then you will have a problem with a vehicle. I drilled down 27 inches and waited...no water. The areas a guy has to look out for are the inlets, roads, and bridges...that is were the water is rushing under the ice, usually cant see it this time of year. If a guy were to venture out right now think spring, water is rushing in under the ice from the banks. Fish will be drawn to the shallower waters this time of year as they were during first ice. Now, after today, this water has stopped and the shallows are now a bit more oxygenated...almost like November and December when fishing was great. My pointer is fish next to these spots we wouldn't drive on and I'm sure you will have great success, just my .02 and experience. Good luck, take care, and be safe. TM

Two days of casino food and Kokanee will do that to a guy. Somehow I got in and out of Canada with an expired passport. Thought for a second I was going to have to leave dirty jr without a mother. I was pretty steamed she threw that passport in.

Gator...buddy and I fished Sak/Douglas Creek area Friday...solid 30 inches where we were at-ramp we went off had some water collecting on top but no issues at all...drove out in half ton trucks...no concerns. Looks like highs in the 20's lows in the teens for the next week...lot's of ice fishing season left!
