Had my best day fishing walleyes in 30+mph winds and rain. Would not have gone out if the captain of the boat was any less experienced than he was. Having a quality boat and motor that you trust is also very important. The two of us caught our limit of large eyes in a short period of time. Kept our life jackets on the whole time. Next day was calm and the bite was not near as good.

I hate clam days. Give my chop over bugs any day.

At 20-25 mph winds, I pick my spots (and docks), however.

I'll go out on 25mph wind days, IF I know I'm going to be able to actually fish out of the wind. Running in waves sucks, but it's doable if there's protected fishing. Actually fishing in 25mph winds and waves is not for me.

McKenzie bay has been my open water home for 12 years, you can find calm water somewhere in the bay area, unless the wind is way bad.
If it is coming out of the northwest, go right to the marina and try fish point or ski bay.

Amen! A hot, calm day dealing with bugs on Sak can be absolutely miserable.

Its those big damn flies, no matter how clean I keep my boat, and myself, them damn flies can find me a mile from shore, and eff up a calm day of fishing every time.

You're supposed to whipe your ass after crapping by the neighbors boat.

Was fishing with my old man by Douglas Bay one day. There were flies everywhere. They obviously didn't know what to do because they wouldn't even move. The bow of the boat was completely covered in dead flies that I stepped on. They'd land on your face and it didn't matter how much you shook your head, they were attached. Absolutely miserable.

I typically know a place to get away from most winds, so wind direction(if it's going to be windy) plays a big role on where I go. I've found some awesome spots fishing areas just because they were tolerable with the wind that day. Remember the wind direction and the spot and you can go back to the well the next time conditions are the same. That said, I really hate wind for the most part. 15 or less is when I like to fish. I like dead calm in spring and fall when there is no bugs. If the wind is gusting over 30, it may very well become happy hour.

It is shaping up to be a hot windy dry summer... I hope it rains like crazy and is windy as hell.

I don't get out as much as I'd like so I go no matter the conditions. However I generally can find a place out of the wind to fish. I was at Graphams island on Devils last year, and the wind was around 25mph out of the southeast. I took my shallow v 14' lund w/15hp out and had a long drive to get out of the wind. I was taking it easy and kinda riding the waves slowly making headway, the front would pound pretty hard when I came down but it really wasn't bothering me. When I got around the island and tried using my trolling motor I found the brand new battery's post had separated from the cells from the pounding it took in the front.

On the way back into the waves some a-hole in a big ass glass boat flew past me at about 20ft to my starboard, not only did it scare the titty sprinkles out of me. but caused a very dangerous wake that I had very little time to prepare for by the time I realized what happened the wake was right next to me I chose to turn away from them and caught one breaking against the side which changed my direction so fast I fell out of my seat and smoked my head against the side rail. As quick as I could I got up and grabbed and turned the boat back into the waves going over the next one at an angle when I bottomed out I watched as the next wave just barely broke over the side by about a 1/2 inch. I think any other way it would have happened I would have swamped my boat in 30fow high winds and no one around. By the time I got back to the ramp the guy was gone and I had blood running down the whole side of my face and soaked my shirt. I tried locating the guy in the campground but didn't see anything I thought the boat looked like. He would have gotten an ear full. But I did keep 4 walleyes around 18-20" I threw about 6 more that size back looking for a monster in about 2hrs. Long story short: if you see a small boat out in bad conditions be considerate and give a wide berth.

I seen a 14ftr that must come over from woodland --- we were fishing along the highway by the casino. wind was out of the SE. Fish were bighting and the guy and his wife were putting on a jigging clinic. Wind steadily raised as the day went by -- didn't effect us much as we hugged the highway. They went to take off and were laughing and smiling. I tried to follow them with my eyes but lost track about a 1/3 over. It just made us wonder if they made it. Didn't hear anything on the news -- those 14ftrs make it through a lot more than one thinks. Never owned one - had a 15 but it had a floor and it was deeper.

Also seen an old lund 14 over on seven sisters -- wind out of the west --- he came in from lake sak park. Blew in so to speak with the light morning west wind. It was one of those fishing days that was awesome until the wind came up. He was another one that I just wonder how he made it back and hope that he had the fuel to do it. He struggled to go forward in the current that afternoon - but off he went.

I think the worst stuff I have been in was Beulah a few years ago for the classic (states best run tournament) ::: I was smart enough to not break anything but there were times that I was pooped a little. They had to be 8' rollers if not more.

I'm with plain skeeter on this one. I fish the classic most years and that year was no exception. We made it all the way to the Indian Hills area when we took off and it was bad getting there. Early in the afternoon we made our way back and bad is an understatement...It also cost me a windshield but such is life.

Miserable, yes, but I've had some damn good fishing days with bugs. The more they bite, the less you notice.
