My 2026 season opener did not go according to plan. I arrived at Lake Sakakawea on April 16th, facing brutal conditions: low water levels where no docks were in, high winds, and unexpected snow.
To make matters worse, by day two I was dealing with motor issues and was forced to rely on my kicker to scout and fish. Total isolation on the big water.
While I didn't find the giant females I was after, I ended up landing nine walleyes over three solid days of fishing by figuring out the bite in tough, changing conditions.
In this video, I’m pulling back the curtain on the behind-the-scenes struggles and the grit needed to tackle early-season fishing on the big water. This isn't your typical educational video; it is a raw, honest look at shaking off the rust.
