Boat motor question?

What is the purpose of this screw on my 1991 mercury classic 40hp???

Pobably idle speed adjustment.

I'm not a boat motor guy, but it looks like an idle speed adjustment screw to me also.

Is that lever mechanism for the throttle or for shifting from forward, neutral and reverse?

Pretty sure that's the adjustable stop to set the neutral position for the shifter. The two adjusters below it set the forward and reverse stops.

Next question, I have a mercury classic 40hp that runs good but doesn't seem to have a lot of power. My buddy is trying to sell me his mercury classic 50hp but I'd hate to swap them out and dont feel a difference. Pain in the ass to swap? Not worth it? I attached a pic of the boat I bought. Thanks

Are you able to get it on plane fairly quick with your normal load ? That's what is important to me , once on plane I throttle back anyway. If your not plowing water I don't know that it will be a huge difference , maybe a few more MPH but not a bunch.
I ran a 20 merc on a smoker craft and it would plane out fairly easy with 2 people. I have a 50 merc on a 16' lund and it's plenty for that boat. Hard to tell by the pic if your prop is dinged up but it kinda looks like it ,that makes a difference if it is.

Thats exactly what it feels like plowing water and it takes awhile to plane out and when it does it feels borderline. The prop does have some nics and dings, I'll take a picture of the prop and post it see what you think. Im new to the boat world so Im trying to learn as much as I can.

You need a new prop for sure , Iv'e dressed them up with a file before and got by but that one is out of balance.

If you have FB , there is a guy from Garrison that has some used ones for sale. Iv'e never bought one so no idea how much a new one is. I'd bring the old one with , there are different pitches and sizes.

I just looked on ebay , all sorts of them for around $ 60 . It should have a number stamped on the outside of the hub someplace that tells you what pitch it is.
