    New: Glo shot ice jig!

Dang. If it's Vex I'll probably have to rig some wonky thing to make it jive with my Marcum stuff. Hmmm...

    Please wear your orange....

Wait...are you talking about deer or pheasants? Because that statement honestly describes both to a T in North Dakota. I wear orange for deer and pheasants, no exceptions. This year I had two does walk past me at 10 yards while I was sitting on a stool in the woods. Wind was right and I didn't...

    New: Glo shot ice jig!

No thanks. What a PIA to keep track of those little glow stick things. Glow paint works just fine, and if you're not checking your lure every so often anyway to make sure the minnow is lively and doesn't need to be replaced, then you're not checking it enough. Easy to reel up, check, give a...

    How's it been??

I've snagged one roodie this year out of dumb luck, but have not specifically targeted them yet. That will change now that my deer tags are filled. Anyone running into birds now that "winter" is here? I know there are a lot of crops still up and that has to hurt, but I'm curious if the outlook...

    Deer Rut 2018

I dunno...I'm ok with folks doing what they do on public. My experience on the slice of public heaven I hunt is that nobody hunts like I do. Everyone walks. From noon Friday there were guys walking (during the rut on a cold, winter day when the deer were moving already...makes zero sense, but...

    What is this ?

The buck I got was stuffed with caul fat. For a rutting deer he also had a pretty sizable cap of fat round his carcass, too. They've definitely been eating better with all the crops standing later than normal.

    Deer Rut 2018

The buck I tagged came by hot on the trail of a doe that was zipping through the trees at high speed. She was running like her tail was on fire, and he wasn't letting her get away! Punched my tag at 12:10 pm, making it officially the fasted deer season I've ever had.

    Deer Rut 2018

I'm taking Thursday and Friday off. Dropping kiddos at daycare Thursday morning, then right to the deer woods. Bow in hand through Friday AM, then back to the truck for orange and the Ought-Six. Sleeping in the truck until some tag is punched. Gonna be a cold one for that...ha!

    Deer Rut 2018

Uggghh. I know. Could not believe the amount of crops still up, but was happy to see plenty of farmers out making the best of it. Still, wishful thinking at best. Oh well, it's gonna be what it's gonna be and I won't be punching a tag from my house, so might as well see what happens! The big...

Clay county now is the range for Dem timbers

A lone wolf doesn't really get me too riled. Just like the oddball bear in the RRV, or a mountain lion winding up in SW Minnesota. I don't think there's any conspiracy going on. There's always going to be a loner predator that winds up in a weird location. Now, when there's a pack of wolves...

    .410 shotgun

I started with a .410. Want to sap a new hunter's budding excitement and confidence? Give them one of those guns and tell them to go kill birds. It's like trying to scoop minnows with a landing net. I'd have been better off with a .22 sniping birds out of treetops than trying to hit them on the...

    buck lure?

I've successfully implemented scents twice. The first was when I first started hunting in Fergus Falls at the farm. My grandpa got this spray from a local guy called "Tanks" and he sprayed it all over near where I was sitting. Myself being young and bored, only hunted a couple hours before cold...

Black Bear rug open or closed mouth

I think if they actually used the bear's skull, then open would be sweet. But they're always a fake mouth, so that seems silly. I think a closed mouth would be classy. Then get the skull boiled and bleached as a swanky mantel trophy.

Antler Growth vs. Age in ND

Some day when the kids are older and I have enough time to spend in the woods and wait, I will. Now I get a weekend and that's it. By Saturday afternoon on opener, the next deer that comes by with horns gets a free ride home with me.

    Not shooting worth a hoot...

I don't have time to run through all the replies at the moment, so apologies if this has already been mentioned. Get your gun fitted. I struggled like crazy all through high school and college shooting my 870. It was frustrating has hell, and didn't seem to matter how much shooting I got in or...

Antler Growth vs. Age in ND

First buck I ever shot was aged by the taxidermist at 6.5 years old. I never had the rack scored, but I doubt it's over 150. He was an old, corn-fed buck and took me 4 hours to drag back to the truck (about twice as long as normal). Then it took three of us (two on the ground, one in the bed)...

    Plucked mallard recipe?

It's easily my family's favorite meal. This fall I've had to put more duck breasts per bag because my 5- and 2-year-old can't stop eating it.

    This Happened to Me

Went hunting his weekend way west of DL. Put in close to 800 miles. Came home Sunday evening. This morning went to work and heard a weird noise when I pulled into the parking lot. Looked around and didn’t see anything that I may have run over. Checked my truck and found this neat souvenir. No...
