    If you plan on doing a lot of walking out in the boonies(rugged badlands), a handheld GPS with a waypoint at your vehicle would not be a bad idea. If you don't know your area real well and get out of eyesight of your entry point a lot of the drainages look the same. Just a nice piece of insurance.

    Things my dog has rolled in

    Our black lab from my childhood days rolled in a rotten dead skunk. That was the worst as it was skunk and death. I scrubbed that dog with tomato juice and all kinds of soap about 3 separate times to make it tolerable. He still had a hint of it almost a year later when he would get wet.
