His wife is up there for a little over a year in medical school rotation. So last year he still wasn't a resident so we took advantage of having our own vehicle and tags that were over the counter and easy access for non residents. The renting of a vehicle is were it gets expensive most places wont even rent to you if they know you are going up the haul road. places that will usually come at a good price. The cheapest way to go we heard is a U-Haul pickup they are not real expensive and apparently don't ask what your doing with it, but if more than 2 people would probably not be great as they are just single cab pickups. We did meet some older guys from Colorado that rented a F-250 with a slid in camper in the back seemed like a slick set up (other then it being a ford) but they said it wasn't cheap. For those that don't know if your with in 5 miles of the haul road its archery equipment only no shotguns even. there are no roads that go out from the haul road so walking only and the ground being soft and spongy wears you out very quickly. If i was to do it again i would probably hire someone to fly us out the 5 miles so we could have the option to use the rifle. We did see a few rigs of people that drove up from the lower 48 all the way if you had 3-4 people that could all take the extra time I'm sure would save a ton on air fair and wouldn't have to worry about all your stuff making it. we spent 7 days including driving up and back. Hope i answered your questions ok if yea get the chance i would recommend going just the seeing that country was worth it.This fall Steve will be a resident so we he be going after mountain goat when I'm up there and I'll get a black bear tag.
