22Mag is a fantastic choice to have in the Rod Locker of your boat, a summertime plinker, and/or anytime a person might come across a <200yd fox or smaller furbearer you'd like to for sure be able to save the hide. From a bolt action IMO/IME the 22Mag feeds a lot smoother and more reliably than an HMR. Those Ruger rotary mags in 22Mag are as close to feed/function perfection as one can have from a detachable mag 22Mag IMO/IME.

.17HMR is similar but really gets it's arse kicked in the wind, is much MORE explosive on small rodents, and is more dependent on proper placement to get into the vitals of larger vermin like a full-sized raccoon, badger, or skunk. Fox are fairly thin-skinned vs. a raccoon, skunk, or badger and the HMR <200yds wouldn't make me feel underpinned @ all.

The B&T Tiger shush's the 22Mag and the HMR down to nothing but the supersonic woosh of air quite well. I've been very pleasantly surprised how much the HMR is moderated by the 'Tiger.
They hush the "crack"?

mostly hornady but Ive got a gob of cci. I'll give them a try. Thanks
Make sure they are the CCI A17 rounds--they have a little more velocity to them and some fairy dust that makes the A17's cycle better (at least that's what the interweb says). I shot those out of my bolt .17hmr as well and group better than anything else I had, so at least I only have to buy one brand/round.

I like the .17 as it's a 100yd gun PERIOD Without wind, a 100yd zero in a dime is the practically the same for any brand/weight/bullet design from 100yds back to the muzzle; maybe a "click" "here or there"; like a shark with a laser on it's head: The 20grn FMJ is the best squirrel bullet ever conceived. IMHE/O^^^^: DO NOT abusively clean. Use nylon brushes and a one piece rod. THAT IS ALL :p

^^^^That's cool. I used to shoot (sadly/with much regret) song birds with a BB gun within 15yrds. It had enough energy. IMHO: It's always easy to "quarter back": Hornady, should've "Weatherby" sharpened shoulders, went full .177 instead of .172, increased twist and loaded some "heavy for caliber" bullets.

It's great for what it is: A 100yd laser with "enough" retained energy. IMHO. That is all.
