Thanks to South Dakota’s Mentored Hunting Program, my 8-year-old son was able to harvest his very first deer! He used the same 7mm-08 his mom used to harvest her first deer, and he even loaded his own ammo. The doe was quartering toward us when he made a great shot just behind the front shoulder taking out the heart and exited just behind the rib cage on the opposite side. He was able to hunt in comfort (almost too comfortable, haha) from a homemade trailer blind built by his grandpa. Last year, I was fortunate enough to witness my wife harvest her first deer. This year, I got to experience that same unforgettable moment with my son. Making memories like these with my family is what hunting is all about. I’m one lucky man!
