I have had my eye on hunting the Bob Marshall Wilderness for years -- an elk horseback hunt. My wife's grandpa went on an elk horseback hunt several decades back. They got to a point where the was a cliff with a single trail. Only one caravan of horses could walk this. They were on their way into the wilderness and another group was on their way out. So they waited for the caravan to pass on that single trail first. They asked how they did...they saw several elk racks on the back of horses. The hunters explained that one guy had been killed and tore all to hell by a Grizzly and they had to haul the remaining pieces of him in game bags. Another story I heard was a guy shot an elk and the guide had them hang most of the pieces in a tree, but did something with one of the quarters. Like left it on the ground on purpose. I think the plan was to give the bear something easy so he only takes part of the elk and not the whole darn thing. I guess when they got back to the elk there was a massive grizzly there and they had to kill it or just did kill it. Not sure what the laws are on killing grizzly, but the killed it. So, anyone else hunted there or have any interesting stories?
