Talk about a bunch of Karens. As far as rats go. Rats are attracted to clutter, food, and filth. Keep the food area clean as well as your yard and you will have no problems with rodents. Piles of refuse and your garbage containers, can and do attract rodents with or without chickens. A chicken coop for 6 birds will be the size of a regular dog house and can be put on cinder blocks. I've seen people that use a large dog travel cage with a doggie door access and it works fine. The biggest problem with urban chickens, as with most everything else is WINTER. Keeping them, the water, and the eggs from freezing. It can be done as lots of people keep their dogs in the garage in winter. You just have to keep the area cleaned up. It's very similar to keeping an outside dog. Egg On!!!
Good Grief People!! Here's what I know about chickens. They don't smell unless you have too many confined in one area. Six chickens walking in a 100 x 100 ft area (backyardish) produce way less poop than a single 20lb dog. Ever seen the backyard of a house that owns a big dog in the spring? Does that minefield smell? Keep that in mind. As far as being noisy. You gotta be kidding me. Car noise alone in town is way higher that what 6 chickens would produce without a rooster. You people listen to lawn mowers, snow blowers, sirens, semi's and trucks of every kind, motorcycles, radios, barking dogs, kids playing, etc. etc. etc. and you're going to complain about 6 fricken chickens? Egg On!!!
