By 1900 the Bison were for the most part gone and whitetail were going next as stated due to over hunting. It was 1913 when they stop offering license to hunt whitetail to try and save the population of deer and that did not come back until 1931. Bucks only to keep the females making fawns. Not sure what kind of habitat was available in the early 1900 but I know there was a lot of land left idle from the 30s with the banks owning a lot of the land, mainly Federal Land Bank who kept 50% of the mineral rights. Horses could not farm the land like the green and red equipment does now days. There was no fence row to fence row farming back then then but in time the fence rows were all gone along with the small herds of cattle, dairy, chickens ect. and waste land. Trashing machines left a lot of straw piles back then and a lot of fields were taken over by quackgrass. In 1950 there were less than 20000 whitetail license. I was a part of that time and we wore red caps and a red handkerchief pin to our back. Never was a question of getting a license. There were not a lot of deer and other than the family I knew of no others hunting deer. I assume the population of ND is the same as back then with the exception of the oil workers. Then some time ago I remember a dentist telling the story how at that point he had shot 25 does, all with the blessing of game and fish and giving the deer to his customers (not that long ago). There was no end to the number of does one could shoot. Then we say it was the bad winters and loss of habitat that cost the decline in deer. History does repeat itself. Now we fight between each other on what is right, who gets what, blame habitat and winter which is a part of the problem and repeat history by a blessing with those in the know. So maybe we go back to 1913 and wait 18 years before anyone gets a license. Or maybe we work together to find answers and no game and fish is not where I would turn to for answers. They are book leaners who for some lost common sense. db - - - Updated - - - unit 7 set 6 bring back the game hunting and game conservation in nd
