I am somewhat familiar with the Josh Renville photo controversy that has been going on a North High as Josh is a captain on the North High wrestling team. As I was standing in line to pay my admission into the event, I looked up and was shocked to see what was painted on the wall of the Davies lunchroom/commons area. What I saw was eerily similar to the photo Josh had submitted for publishing in the North High yearbook – young men who signed up for military service, rifles in hand, standing in front of a large American flag. In all fairness, this image was part of a large mural containing an image of Judge Ronald Davies, the school’s namesake. Davies made important civil rights rulings from the bench that had a lasting impact in this country because his rulings were not ignored by other courts. Principal Dan Dahlen has made the decision not to publish Josh’s submitted photo based on combining three of the school district’s policies. So far the district has stood behind Dahlen, and I understand that they need to in order for him to maintain whatever credibility he has left at North. Davies’ rulings were not ignored around the country, and Dahlen’s decision should not be ignored around the school district. Superintendent Schatz, I call on you to send Dahlen to Davies High, paint can in hand, to cover up the Davies mural, or at least the portion depicting young men who signed up for military service, rifles in hand, standing in front of a large American flag.
