The other day Royce freaked out on a hookset (like he does every time) and threw his less-than-dexterous paws up on the gunnel, knocking my nice 1/4" thick homemade aluminum fishing ruler into the briny deep.

What's a quality store-bought replacement? The Judge? Others?

I've got the inside lid of my live well marked with important lengths, ie. 14, 16, 20 and so forth. That way I'll never lose it and I can toss the fish in or out kind of in the same motion.

If I invest in a "good one" I'll likely rivet it into place on the floor alongside my livewell or on the gunnel.

I care about the weight and look of the fish more than length.

We just took a piece of plexiglass and put a boat sticker one on it.

that's how my homemade aluminum one was made - with a sticker - worked well enough - guess I could just make another

Nah the fish was skinny and long. A friend caught it and wanted to measure it. I didnt want the boat carpet touching the fishes skin.

keep an eye on your sales flyer from Menards. Stainless steel yard (36") stick for free with rebate. Regularly $8 I think. Sale for $4 with $ 4 rebate if memory serves me correctly. Missed it twice already this year.

i got an expandable one from Scheels for 9 bucks its grey and measures to 19 all the time and you can expand it out to 38. It has been used and abused 5 years so far and still holding up.

What would be really cool is making one with beer cans, cast iron and sand.
