Given the same tire size and construction an SUV counterpart to a 1/2 ton pickup (Tahoe/Suburban, Expedition/EX, Sequoia, Armada) will run through deep snow better and be more stable on the really slick stuff. Little to no wheel hopping in an SUV compared to a pickup. The better balance of weight distributed over the whole vehicle makes them more stable on the really slick stuff too, you don't have that "loose/light" pickup back end. Suburban/Tahoe, Expedition/EX, Armada, and Sequoia are all essentially 1/2 ton SUV's. They all share drivetrains with their 1/2 ton pickup counterpart. The only real disadvantage to towing with the SUV is the shorter wheel base makes for a potentially rougher ride, and @ the upper limit of their rating that short wheelbase can make things squirrely if you're not careful, but some of the upper end models have on-board air-ride/load leveling that essentially negates that detriment as well. An Aluminum Excursion with solid axles, Ford's new 10-spd tranny, leather seats and rubber floors/cargo area would make an awful nice family hauler/hunting rig. Alas there is no such critter save having one custom built.
