About 45 minutes of huffing it up and down the hills got me to within about 400 yards. They were just topping a ridge when I caught them. A couple shots later (more than I would like to admit), I had him down. It took me a bit to get to him. On the walk to him my chest was a bit tight. I thought it was my pack riding wrong so I stopped and readjusted it but that didn't really help. I wrote it off as adrenaline from shooting. Once I got to him I snapped a quick pick and started dressing him. Got the head off and started boning him out. The whole time my chest was getting tighter and tighter. I decided to throw a couple bags of meat in the pack and head to the truck. By this time my chest was killing me. Decided to take a little longer way out as it would put me on a ridge that a buddy was familiar with and if something happened he would know where to start looking at. I called the buddy as soon as I had signal and let him know I was in trouble and headed for the ridge. About half way out I had to dump the meat as I just couldn't carry it. Finally made the ridge and worked my way out. Took me about three hours to get back to the truck. I started it up and headed for Hwy 85 while calling the wife to break the news to her.
so here's the story...I headed out Friday morning and was up on Magpie road. As I was getting my pack on a guy stopped to ask if I was after elk or deer. As soon as I said elk he indicated he has just watched a herd walking a ridge. He walked in with me for a bit to make sure I was headed in the right direction (BTW thanks to him for the tip. I don't know who you are other than you were from Dickinson). . Ended up at the Dickinson ER. They are thinking it was a mild heart attack. Lots of appointments tomorrow to get everything worked out. My buddy, another bud from work and three other folks walked I yesterday and picked up the meat I dropped as well as boned out the rest of the bull. Surprisingly the coyotes hadn't touched a thing. So very grateful for those that offered to help out. Your generosity was very appreciated!!! edit...I was asked about the legality of them retrieving my elk. I had called the warden from the hospital. My buddy also talked to him and got a permit to carry it.
