My wife and I purchased an undeveloped lake lot in Beltrami County 3 yrs ago this week in fact. It is a 2200 acre lake. MN DNR stocks it with walleye fry each year(approx. 1.9 million). I would say it isn't really a walleye lake yet..as we only catch a few of them..mostly in the 15-18 inch range(Good eaters though) It is also aggressively managed for bluegill/sunfish with only a 5 a day limit. Blugills/sunfish are readily available to catch pretty much anywhere along the weed lines/bulrushes. The lake only has like 2 resorts and a rv campground on it. I would say the lake has an equal mix of year rounders and summer cabins/campers. It is not a very deep lake..about 22 ft at the deepest and thus has a large amount of aquatic vegetation both emergent and submergent... it is fairly clear..10-14 ft..about the same as other lakes that size. Lots of bulrushes(while that doesn't make for scenic beauty to some, it does keep the massive numbers of jet skiers you see on other lakes down to almost nothing on our lake). What can we do and what can't we do as far as our lot and lakeshore? Lake has a 100ft setback..nothing built closer than 100ft to lake. Bullrushes..we are able to make a path to open water..boat width or 15ft wide max without a permit. We are able to remove vegetation at shoreline....either 50 ft or 1/2 the length of shoreline..whichever is less. Someone from Beltrami County environ services I believe..maybe its DNR..can't recall..could give a permit to do more..maybe. They do encourage buffers on shoreline..basically want you to leave the first 25 ft of shoreline property alone..ie..no lawns. When we travel around the lake in our pontoon viewing the other cabins/houses and such..it is pretty evident that some of them were probably grandfathered in as far as complying with the 100ft set back. Which tells me, the county has been trying to manage lake country for future inhabitants. We have added power in year 1, water last year, and septic this summer, all with the correct permitting processes. We have a park model on our lot now. All that being said..i would say the lake we are on is about 50% inhabited with the other 50% being either just too low of ground or just undeveloped as yet. The lake level records don't show much variance from year to year. We don't have a lake groomer so to speak..but rather a weed rake that we use to rake on either side of the dock. At the end of the day...I do not see this particular lake being overrun with millionaires and multimillion dollar house, lawns etc.to negatively affect this lake as it just doesn't seem to fit this area and landscape. Thank goodness! Just wanted to give my .02 on the condition of this particular lake in Mn lake country. We plan to stay there during the summers when we get old....make that older.
