There is no set rate a nursing home can charge a person . If you do not have nursing home insurance, or you have one, but it only pays a minimal amount per day, you have to pony up the rest of the cost they charge you. You have to give them a list of ALL your money and assets you have, home, land, CDs, bonds, retirement funds, life insurance, burial funds, etc., etc., etc. The more you have, the more they can charge you per day. I know this because my mom who is now 89, and had Thrivent which is a Lutheran organization nursing home insurance, and paid, I believe $150 a day for 3 years "that's the way she had hers set up", and she had to kick in the rest of what it cost to stay there. She started out at Edgewood and was there for 4 or 5 years and she has been in Minot Health and Rehab for 3 years now. When her money was gone, we put her on Medicaid to help pay for the nursing home. All the money she can have to her name is, a $6000 burial fund and $3000. That being said, she pays her share of the nursing home monthly payment, with her social security and VA checks, and the nursing home sends the state a bill for the rest of the monthly fee.
