My son started at 10 on a used Honda XR80 big wheel and rode that for 2 years. He loved it as it wasn't to big or to small. He could throw it around and yet had enough power to keep up with me. That dang bike would do about 50mph with 220 pound guy on it. Great bike add gas and change oil yearly. Now he is riding a TTR 125 at the age of 12. Its a lot more bike then the 80 was. I ride it to town every now and then and keep up with the cars on the highway. IMO the 125 would be a little to much for a young rider. Heck I sold the 80 for more then I paid for it and the guy that bought it couldn't believe the deal he got. The smaller bike hold their value and are easy to sell. Found better deals in Minot at Sports Specialties and Pure Honda in Minot then we did anywhere in Bismarck. I started on a 100 Yamaha at 11 and rode that until I was 13 had plenty of power for me. I would stay away from those Chinese knock offs, they are junk and no one will work on them. Also look for big tires on the smaller bikes, they handle better and are easier to ride. Plus safety gear is a plus even if its jeans, long sleeve shirt, gloves, and a pair of good boots. Never ever get on with shorts. bisman always has gently used riding gear for about half price. Good Luck and keep them safe!
