For years we’ve always cleaned them by breasting and taking the legs. We always cut the left leg above the spur and right below. Well this year two friends ran into the Barney’s. They couldn’t give them real violations but did charge them $50 each. These guys had even put wings in the survey bags as they do each year and are two who fill out every GnF survey. Needless to say, they didn’t turn them in and I’m sure never will again. So, I guess I’m saying trust no one. If you have an old mount you need redone I’d call and make sure you have every I dotted and t crossed.
It all depends on the mood of a warden when it comes to those fine rules. A couple guys in our pheasant party found that out this year. Rules say you need a leg and a wing attached. Why a fricken wing who knows. After all a spurred leg tells you it’s a rooster. For years we’ve always cleaned them by breasting and taking the legs. We always cut the left leg above the spur and right below. So each package has 2 breasts and 2 legs with all having the spur on the right leg. We get checked probably once every 3 or 4 years and have been doing this for 40 years this year. Many times the wardens would tell us what the rule says and let us know someday you might run into a Barney Fife who’ll give you a ticket. But we can see you didn’t violate and only have roosters. Or you just might run into one of the Barneys who can’t think for themselves or have a quota (oops I guess they’re goals since quotas are illegal in ND).
