They had it when i was in high schoole 15 years back scenic sports in williston had a longest tail feather weekly an it was like a box of shells to win the week. But wondering if anyone does that yet or is it past history. Shot one today that is 26in plus havnt pulled it. But also anybody kill a bird with double spurs my first also today. Have shot alot of roosters in my life never seem a double spur bird albiet smaller than the first 3 year old bird . Thank you fellas.

I can’t comment on the double spur thing, but I’ve heard about these 26” plus tails my entire life. I’ve yet to see one, and I’ve seen plenty. Let’s see one against a tape…….

I live to hunt birds an believe it or not i hunt with out a dog my lab zoey passed in 2017. Still love to chase them but use different tactics an it can be done. My area on a certain good years late season produces 1 year old roosters with 24 in tails! They just are real healthy i guess.

There is a little nub sticking on the butt where the tail feathers grow out off, I do not know what it is called. Find that nub and then run a tape measure from the nub to the end of the tail feather. Then add about 3/8 to 1/2 inch to the length. It is not 100% accurate but very close. Do it a few times on birds you shoot for practice, and you will be surprised how close it is.

There use to be a bar in Mandan that had a longest tail feather contest. I had one at 28.250 and got beat out by Dale Hettinger head of the N.D.G.F His feather was just over 29.00 inches. That was back about 1980 something. The later in the year you go the longer the feather get.

The bar in Mdn was Vicki's. Before that it was The Lonesome Dove on The Strip. Don't know if any contests in the area now.

All the ones around me have stopped doing the contest, too much drama because no one can honor the spirit of the rule anymore. Had people bringing plucked tails in because they knew the bartender etc. Sucks because it was always fun to be a part of and the awards nights were always good for the bragging and the beer!

Some people will cheat to win a used Kleenex if it means they get to say they won.

All the contest I use to entry in you had to leave feather in bird too many issues with feathers guys would use every year. I have won many shoot guns and great gifts. I only hunt for prize roosters now let rest young guns shoot all others. I am more of trophy hunter. Fun when you jump them big roosters and that long tail gets a waving, double and or triple wave at times. I have few over 30" mounted birds but I have many places that don't get hunted and live long. Heck quit few in my back yard that come to feed are impressive fun just to watch them. Love them ivory tipped spurs 3/4' to 1" are dandy.
